A Vintage Ford Fetches $1.21 Million at Barrett-Jackson

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It was no surprise that two classic Ford products commanded top dollar last weekend at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson auction here. What took some onlookers aback was the fact that the number-one draw was a plane: a vintage 1929 Ford Trimotor, which fetched $1.21 million.

One of the top attractions was an original 1955 Ford Thunderbird — production model #1 — which sold for $660,000. All prices include the customary 10 percent "buyer's premium."

The emphasis was mostly on muscle, from retro to post-modern. A classic 1970 Plymouth Superbird commanded $551,000 while Jeff Gordon's 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo NASCAR racer was hammered down for just $1,000 less.

Among the other stratospherically priced lots: a custom-built Buick Blackhawk from GM's Heritage collection ($522,500), a 2009 Ford Mustang FR500CJ Cobra Jet ($412,500), a 2005 Saleen S7 from the movie Iron Man ($412,500), the first production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro ($385,000) and a 2008 Dodge Viper Hurst 50th Anniversary Edition ($275,000).

Proceeds from a number of the vehicles went to various charities.
