Ford 24-7 concepts
What's special about it?
It's what's inside that counts, right? At least that is what Ford hopes with its three 24-7 concept vehicles. Their exterior styling might be from the '80s movie "Tron," but all three 24-7s (a wagon, coupe and pickup) feature advanced communication and telematic technologies. Developed by Visteon Automotive Systems, these technologies include voice recognition, mobile communication, Internet access, and instrument panels that consist of configurable high-definition projection screens. Ford says that the technologies used in these cars will provide drivers and passengers access to information, people and places at any point in time. The voice and mobile communication technologies allow access to email, hands-free mobile phone usage, real-time route assistance, weather reports, and customized stock market tracking. The projection screens used for the 24-7 instrument panels (eerily similar to the panels used on Star Trek's Enterprise starship) can be configured via voice activation to show different gauges, GPS maps, Internet access and audio systems.
Why should I care?
The name 24-7 refers to the popular "24-7" phrase, meaning "24 hours a day, 7 days a week." Ultimately, Ford hopes that the features found in the 24-7 concept vehicles will help people more efficiently manage their increasingly scarce time. There are a lot of issues to work about concerning these new features ("Gee officer, I didn't see that red light because I was checking my shares of Yahoo stock."), but this is the future Ford sees. Applying communication technologies to a wide variety of cars and trucks (from the factory) will likely be one of the next evolutions in car design. Ford's 24-7 concepts are proof of that.
