IRVINE, Calif. — Fisker Automotive has followed up an earlier "teaser" image with the real thing — a photo of the upcoming plug-in hybrid that it will unveil at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Fisker Automotive, headed by former BMW and Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker, says the new gas-electric sports car will ride on a platform that is all new from the ground up. It is expected to be a strong competitor to the heavily hyped all-electric Tesla Roadster in the new "hot green" market niche just now being invented.

The Fisker's battery pack will be carried at the car's center, between the axles, Fisker says, which explains the "amazingly proportioned" appearance that includes a long hood line. The car is said to be capable of 50 miles on an electric charge, or 620 miles with supplemental use of a gasoline or diesel engine. Fisker also claims the car will be able to achieve fuel economy of 100 mpg.

Fisker Automotive plans to put the hybrid sedan on sale in the fourth quarter of 2009, priced starting at $80,000, and targets production of 15,000 per year.
