Frankfurt News: Former Aston Designer Unveils First of Fisker Coachbuild Stable

FRANKFURT, Germany — At the auto show here, Henrik Fisker, the former director of design for Aston Martin, unwrapped the 2006 Tramonto convertible and the 2006 Latigo CS coupe, the first limited-edition sports cars to be produced by his new company, Fisker Coachbuild.

Production will begin in April 2006, Fisker said, limited to 150 units each.

He set up the company in January 2005 in Newport Beach, California, with partner Bernhard Koehler, with whom he worked in design operations at BMW and Ford Motor Co. Among Fisker's more notable creations are the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9.

The Tramonto is a two-seat roadster that uses a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG as its mechanical base. It also employs the retractable hardtop from the SL and Mercedes systems such as active body control. Engine choices include the standard AMG-built 493-horsepower, 5.5-liter V8 or a supercharged, 610-hp variant of the same engine, modified by Kleemann.

The Latigo CS is built on the platform of the BMW 650Ci and incorporates all the electronics, telematics and safety systems from the 6 Series. Engine options include a 367-hp, 4.4-liter V8 and a 550-hp, 5.0-liter V10 from the upcoming M6.

What this means to you: Another exclusive brand to worship. Design wunderkind Henrik Fisker hopes to make a decent living designing and building a handful of custom cars each year, using some of Europe's great sports cars as his mechanical base.
