2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Fioravanti Hidra

GENEVA — Leonardo Fioravanti is determined to cement his reputation as an iconoclast among the Italian carrozzerie. At last year's Geneva auto show, he unveiled the strangely retro-looking Thalia crossover. This year the coachbuilder will mark its 20th anniversary by unveiling its Hidra concept at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show, a car the company describes as a "multipurpose coupe."

Like the Thalia, the Hidra attempts to create a new niche for a "sporty multifunctional vehicle" — although both vehicles still look more like wagons than anything else. Whereas the Thalia had accommodations for seven, the four-door Hidra seats only five.

Also like the Thalia, the Hidra features a unique panoramic roof treatment, but without the "Vista Cruiser" bump-out.

What this means to you: If GM were to resurrect Oldsmobile, the Hidra might be one of its offspring. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
