The "eco" test is similar to a normal test-drive, but it also measures the driver's performance in environmental terms. If successful, the program will spread to the rest of the Fiat dealerships in the U.K.
The pictures show the statuesque (6-foot-2) model holding a USB drive, which is how the Fiat 500 will record driving efficiency. Using Fiat's Blue&Me entertainment and communication system, the USB key will record driving info based on acceleration, deceleration, gearchanges and speed. Plugging it into a computer will give you a score on a scale of 1-100 and features step-by-step tutorials if your eco-driving score is low.
"The Fiat 500 is a lovely car. And eco-drive technology is absolutely right for the moment. People should be thinking more about their driving and the environment," commented Kidd.
Fiat will extend the eco-drive system to all Fiat models during 2009.
Inside Line says: Considering Kidd is also one of the quickest racers in Top Gear's Celebrity Lap, Fiat could not have picked a better model for the job. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
