TURIN, Italy — The Fiat Punto Evo — basically a face-lift of the popular Grande Punto — will be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show and will go on sale in Europe in late October.
The Punto Evo has been mildly restyled, with new bumpers, headlamps and taillamps, plus a completely revised interior.
Fiat is offering a range of updated gas and diesel engines, including a second-generation 1.3-liter Multijet diesel and a 1.4-liter MultiAir gasoline unit, as well as a new dual-fuel power plant that runs on either gasoline or methane. Fiat's Stop and Start system further reduces fuel consumption in stop-and-go urban driving.
The Punto Evo offers such safety gear as seven airbags, including a driver knee bag, as well as adaptive cornering foglamps and an electronic stability program.
A new option is a portable satellite navigation system with color touchscreen called Blue&Me TomTom.
Inside Line says: Not nearly as cute or iconic as the Fiat 500, the Grande Punto nevertheless has been one of the keys to Fiat's revival in Europe. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
