TURIN, Italy — As the world waits to see the innovative minicars of Toyota and Volkswagen, Italian auto giant Fiat plans to make its own statement at the upcoming 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Fiat will debut the Panda Aria concept, which it describes as an "environmental manifesto" to demonstrate the company's commitment to developing low-emissions solutions.

The Panda Aria is powered by a turbocharged 900cc two-cylinder engine that develops 80 horsepower and, equipped with Fiat's Multiair fuel management system, is capable of running on a mixture of gasoline, methane and hydrogen. The powertrain also includes an automated manual gearbox and a stop/start system for greater fuel savings.

The Panda Aria also is constructed of such recyclable materials as cotton, linen and woven coconut fiber, in keeping with the car's eco-friendly theme.

What this means to you: The key message behind the Panda Aria is that current production models still have plenty of room for improvement, through the use of sustainable materials and technologies.
