2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Fiat Fiorino

GENEVA — Fiat pulled the wraps off the commercial edition of its new Fiorino late last year at the 2007 Bologna Auto Show. Now, the Italian automaker is unveiling the passenger version of the Fiorino, one of a trio of compact crossovers that includes the Peugeot Bipper and the Citroën Nemo.

Fiat describes the Fiorino as a "free space" vehicle and an "alternative car with personality." In fact, it straddles several market segments, including the popular European category of city delivery vehicles for small businesses, as well as the growing one for compact utility vehicles that's typified by such rivals as the Renault Kangoo.

The dimensions are extremely compact — the Fiorino is only 10 inches longer than a Mini — making for exceptional maneuverability, especially in Europe's congested cities.

The cabin offers six different seating configurations, with plenty of room for cargo and lots of amenities.

Engine choices include a 1.4-liter gasoline unit that makes 73 horsepower and 87 pound-feet of torque, as well as the acclaimed 1.3-liter Multijet common-rail turbodiesel, which is rated at 75 hp and 140 lb-ft. Customers can order either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

What this means to you: Quirky styling, in the same vein as the original Fiat Multipla minivan. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
