LAUPHEIM, Germany — Hamann has shifted its focus from BMW to Fiat, punching up the 500 Abarth in various stages of tune, including a performance kit for the Abarth Essesse. The Hamann 500 Abarth will debut at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.

Several different engine upgrades are available for the 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, starting from 160 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque.

The full boat includes a re-engineered cylinder head with new cams, forged pistons, uprated con rods, a modified turbocharger with twin charge-air coolers, upgraded engine electronics, a racing clutch, larger disc brakes with four-piston calipers and self-locking diff. Output is hiked to 275 hp and torque boosted to 280 lb-ft.

Hamann offers a choice of custom 17- and 18-inch alloy rims, as well as a variety of aero body components rendered in light composite materials, including front skirt, side skirts, fender extensions and rear diffuser.

To dress up the cabin, an aluminum pedal set and embroidered logo floor mats are available.

Inside Line says: Hamann insists its Fiat 500 aero kit "renders a masculine appearance." Clearly, the Germans haven't communicated with their Italian counterparts at Abarth. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

The article does not mention any modifications to the suspension.

I believe you have to modify (reinforce) the suspension in order to handle that amount of power,

especially in a car that weighs less than a ton.
