2012 Fiat 500, Dodge Journey Recalled for Contaminated Brake Fluid

WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling an estimated 340 2012 Fiat 500s and Dodge Journeys because contaminated brake fluid could lead to loss of braking ability, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Some vehicles were assembled with contaminated brake fluid and may experience a degradation of the sealing components within the brake system," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This could lead to a loss of braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash."

The affected vehicles were assembled at Chrysler's Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico. In documentation filed with the federal government, Chrysler said it started an investigation into the matter on October 26.

"It was determined that one drum was filled with a red-colored fluid that was suspected to be power steering fluid," Chrysler said. "The brake evac and fill machines were completely disassembled and replaced (sic) all nylon and rubber components as well as replacing the internal tanks. All other components were washed in soap and water than dried thoroughly."

Fiat and Dodge dealers will replace all brake components that come in contact with hydraulic brake fluid. The recall is expected to begin in December. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
