- Fiat finally confirms its 500 will come to the U.S.
- Dealers will begin taking orders for the Fiat 500 later this year.
- The 500C convertible will follow in the spring.
TURIN, Italy — Fiat has formally announced the upcoming U.S. launch of the 500 and says dealers will begin taking orders later this year. The 500C convertible will follow in the spring.
Fiat said the car, known widely across Europe by its Italian name, Cinquecento, has been "reimagined" with "unique adaptations" for the North American market. It will be sold in the U.S. in Pop, Lounge and Sport editions, all of them assembled at the Chrysler plant in Toluca, Mexico.
The 500 Sport gets a larger grille, restyled front and rear fascias, body-side sill cladding, 16-inch aluminum wheels with gray painted pockets, red painted brake calipers, chrome exhaust tip and gloss black shadow-line window trim, as well as a sport-tuned suspension. A SkyDome power sunroof is an extra-cost option.
The 500 Sport will be powered by Fiat's 101-horsepower 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder gasoline engine.

Looks very cool. Maybe we Yanks will finally get a stylish small car that people actually want to buy and can afford.

If the published roadmap holds true, we won't see the 500 Abarth until 2012. As exciting as this car is, having to wait another year-plus for the version I actually want is very disappointing.

Fiat has a great product to offer here in the U.S. if the price is right. Those who are old enough to remember the fix-it-again-tony days are probably driving Toyota Camry's, Chevrolet Impala's, or some other large sedan and wouldn't consider a sub-compact anyway. Things change! Hyundai for example!!! Let's focus on the people that will buy this car like the 20 and 30 somethings that want something cool that can fit in a budget. The Mini isn't that cheap for what it really is...The 500 will compete well.
