2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Fiat 500 Abarth

GENEVA — Fiat continues to rebuild its fabled Abarth brand, which last year introduced a sporting version of the Grande Punto. This year's model is the eagerly awaited Fiat 500 Abarth.

Developed by Fiat's Centro Stile and inspired by the '60s-era 500 Abarth, the latest edition is fitted with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 135 horsepower and maximum torque of 152 pound-feet. It joins the Grande Punto Abarth, which features a 155-hp version of the same engine.

The new 500 Abarth also employs a torque transfer control system that improves traction, especially in cornering.

The car will go on sale in July through the exclusive Abarth network.

What this means to you: This is the 500 derivative that everyone's been waiting for in Europe. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
