Sold! 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Commands a Record $12.2 Million at Auction

MARANELLO, Italy — The most expensive car ever sold at auction? That record now belongs to a Scaglietti-bodied 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, which sold last weekend for $12.2 million at the annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event here.

The so-called "pontoon fender" Testa Rossa is one of only 22 examples that were built in Maranello in 1957-'58. The Ferrari 250TR won 10 of 19 races that it entered from 1958 through 1961.

The sale was conducted by RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby's.

The sale of the 250TR shattered the previous mark set at last year's event by a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, which was hammered down for $11 million.
