    What Is It?

    2005 Ferrari Superamerica

    What's Special About It?

Ferrari has combined the latest in tinted glass technology (called electrochromic) with an ingeniously simple rotating roof mechanism to create a first-of-its-kind targa Ferrari. Using the 575M as its base vehicle, the Superamerica's glass roof can alter its level of tint between five settings, going from clear to nearly opaque in less than a minute. More impressive is the graceful rotating action of the roof as it transforms from closed coupe to open targa in less than 10 seconds. Additional upgrades include a 25-horsepower boost from the 575M, giving the Superamerica a total of 540 hp.

    What's Edmunds' Take?

Watching the Superamerica's power top in action brings on one of those "Why didn't I think of that?!" moments. The innovative application of its rotating roof not only looks cool, but also gives the car an effective — and clear — rear wind blocker. If there's any downside to the roof's design it's the somewhat weighty look of the rear roof pillars on the otherwise athletic 575 body. But given the overall benefits provided by this unique roof design, we'll take it! — Karl Brauer
