Detroit Show: Ferrari FXX and Mazda Kabura Win Kudos From Designers

DETROIT — The Chevrolet Camaro concept, the Mazda Kabura, and the Ferrari FXX took the top prizes in the new EyesOn Design Awards at the 2006 North American International Auto Show on Tuesday.

The Kabura won the "aesthetics and innovation" award for setting a new and significant design standard, the judges said. The "concept implementation award" was given to the Camaro, while the Ferrari FXX snagged the "functionality award." The judges credited the Ferrari with enabling the user to "execute daily life in a proficient and constructive way."

Judges included Tom Gale, former head of design for Chrysler; Willie G. Davidson, from Harley-Davidson; and Chris Bangle, director of BMW Group Design. The EyesOn Design competition is unique because the cars and trucks are judged by auto designers.

What this means to you: This new design competition has tons of legitimacy already, given the stature of the judges.
