MONZA, Italy — Ferrari's first online virtual simulator debuted on Thursday, enabling the user "to experience all the sensations of driving an F10 virtually," the Italian marque said in a statement.
So faithful is the simulator to the real-world driving experience that it even reproduces "the tension that the neck muscles are subjected to when driving a single-seater," Ferrari said.
The first release pits drivers from around the world against one another on the famed Fiorano circuit. Ferrari said subsequent releases will feature the Mugello and Nürburgring circuits.
Ferrari's F1 drivers, including Felipe Massa, were recruited to develop the simulator. "[They] tested the simulator personally in order to optimize its performance," said Ferrari. "The simulator reproduces the cockpit and steering wheel of the F10, thus revealing all its controls and functionality."
Users will be able to record their time online and take part in an international tournament that will reward the highest-ranking drivers with unspecified "Ferrari products." At the end of the tournament, the five fastest drivers will win a trip to Maranello, Italy, to take part in the Ferrari Driver Academy course.
The simulator can be bought online for the U.S. equivalent of $18.95 for the first release.
