MODENA, Italy — Sergio Scaglietti was a skilled repairman and an early friend of Enzo Ferrari and his son Dino. That friendship with the Ferrari family — Scaglietti located his first repair shop in 1951 across the road from the Ferrari works in Maranello — and his skill in repairing and eventually designing racecars would make the Scaglietti name one of the most revered in sports-car circles.
Scaglietti, who died Sunday at age 91 at his home in Modena, was associated with some of the most beautiful and famous Ferraris of the past 60 years, notably the 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.
Before it was acquired by Fiat, Carrozzeria Scaglietti built a number of sports and racing cars for Ferrari, including some, like the 250 California and the 250 GTO, that were actually penned by Pininfarina.
A statement on Ferrari's Web site, attributed to Enzo's son Piero Ferrari, said of Scaglietti: "He was one of my father's best friends. He was next to me with Marco Piccinini the day my father died and stayed with me the whole night until the funeral. I loved him and he was a very important part of my life."
Inside Line says: In recent years, Ferrari dedicated the 612 Scaglietti coupe to one of its closest collaborators.
