Tuner Special: Ferrari F430 Calavera

NUREMBERG, Germany — Unique Sportscars and Novitec Rosso have two things in common: They're both based in Germany and they both specialize in tweaking fast, expensive European hardware. Although it's getting a tad long in the tooth, the soon-to-be-mothballed Ferrari F430 still qualifies for go-faster status and thus has become the donor for the Calavera, a collaboration between the two tuning houses.

The Calavera (Spanish for "skull and crossbones") is a special edition of the F430, limited to only 11 copies. Unique Sportscars employed European airbrush artist Knud Tiroch to create the bizarre, tattoo-like filigree work on the car, which boasts embroidered seats and an illuminated engine compartment.

The latter shows off some of Novitec Rosso's handiwork, notably the twin-supercharged 4.3-liter V8 that makes 697 horsepower and 525 pound-feet of torque. So equipped, the Calavera can squirt from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 216 mph.

Novitec Rosso provides a comprehensive chassis overhaul, right down to the 20-inch rims with high-performance Pirelli rubber. The chassis can be raised by 1.6 inches, for better ground clearance, and lowered by 1.4 inches, for improved airflow.

Inside Line says: A skull-and-crossbones tattoo seems like a mighty odd calling card for a firm that specializes in tuning Bugattis, Lambos and Astons. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
