MONTEREY, California — A 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C Lago Speciale Teardrop Coupe with coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi, and a rare 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta topped an eye-popping three-day sale here of European exotics and American classics by RM Auctions. The Talbot-Lago and the Ferrari sold for $4,620,000 each, including a 10-percent "buyer's premium."
RM's Sports & Classics of Monterey auction concluded Saturday with the sale of 14 cars — nine of them Ferraris — at more than a million dollars each. The 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta was one of only seven examples built of that particular model. A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder at the same auction fetched $2,612,500.
A day earlier, a 1948 Tucker 48 Sedan sold for $1,127,500, a new world record for the short-lived American brand. Also topping the million-dollar mark was a 1964 Shelby Cobra USRRC Roadster, which sold for $1,595,000.
The Talbot-Lago was built to order for a wealthy Parisian banker, Antoine Schumann, who is described in the auction literature as being a close friend of racers Pierre-Louis Dreyfus and Luigi Chinetti. The car later finished first in class at the 24 Hours of Spa in 1948.
Another notable sale was a stunning 1949 Delahaye Type 175 S Roadster with custom body by Saoutchik. It was hammered down for $3,300,000.
