A pack of 50 journalists from around the world have been invited to take turns driving the V12-powered Scagliettis during the event. This latest junket follows Ferrari's Panamerican tour in 2006, which featured two 599 GTB Fioranos, and a China tour in 2005 with two 612 Scagliettis. All three trips pale in comparison with Ferrari's 50th-anniversary adventure, which took an F355 all the way around the globe, covering five continents, in 1997.
The two 612 Scagliettis will have "absolutely minimal" modifications including a slightly higher suspension setting and an underbody protector, both to help deal with the "tougher road surfaces" in India.
On the Magic India Discovery trip, the journalists and Ferrari entourage will experience "the delights and richness of India" — and its economic boom, which makes it an increasingly interesting locale for marketing luxury cars.
Among the stages will be one from Calcutta along the Ganges River to the sacred city of Varanasi, a trip through the Corbett National Park and Tiger Reserve, and the Dharamsala, home of the exiled Dalai Lama. Eight support vehicles will follow the tour: five Tatas, two Fiats and one Iveco truck.
The most amusing detail is that participants on the trip will be wearing "sophisticated colonial-style khakis" and "a contemporary take" by hatmaker Borsalino on "the famous pith helmet." Details and images will be available during the tour at the Ferrari World Web site.
What this means to you: The Prancing Horse heads out on another exotic trip. Somehow, we never pictured anyone wearing a pith helmet at the wheel of one, though. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
