2010 Ferrari 458 Italia Is "Tribute to Italy," Explains Ferrari Chairman

MARANELLO, Italy — The 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia probably needed little explanation. But Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo felt compelled to give one anyway, blogging after the car's unveiling this week that it is designed to be "a tribute to Italy and its unique qualities."

"We are proud to pay homage to Italy with a fabulous new car which offers truly high performance along with the kind of innovation that no other Ferrari has ever reached," he said. "The new Ferrari is a tribute to Italy and its unique qualities. The creative flair of its people, the quality and style of its products all go to make up a country that is synonymous with excellence."

The unveiling of the car was overshadowed by the continuing saga of the injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, which dominated the Ferrari corporate site, pushing details of the new car literally to the sidelines of the Web site.

But, if the reaction by bloggers at Inside Line is any indication, the new Ferrari may be right up there with such Italian icons as Sophia Loren, Fellini's La Strada and the Vatican.

"This is the first Ferrari to come along in a long while that is great-looking," wrote one. "Wow, finally a Ferrari that pulls something from future design rather than the past," wrote another. "Bella, bella macchina," said a third.

Earlier this week, Ferrari issued the first pictures of the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia, the successor to the F430. Its official debut comes in September at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The car is equipped with a new 4.5-liter V8 that churns out 570 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.
