Scuderia Soap Box Matches Ferraristi and Elbow Grease in Thrilling Gravity-Powered Series

MARANELLO, Italy — The rococo Italian light glints off the rosso corsa flanks of the Prancing Horse-decorated Ferraris. A crowd holds its breath as the magnificent racing machines roar gloriously, ear-splittingly to life.

Wait, strike that last part. It's the first round of the 2008 Scuderia Soap Box, pitting crews of the Scuderia Ferrari Club against one another in team-built gravity-powered vehicles. The look is pure horsepower, but the sound effects are pure Soap Box.

The teams give their cars names redolent of the marque's glory: Squalo Rosso, Cavallo Volante 2, La Gialla (Yellow One), Diabolika, and the plain and simple Enzo Ferrari.

The Bologna Scuderia Ferrari Club, whose entry bears the cut-to-the-chase name XFX, took the first round. That opening race was staged, appropriately, at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola this past weekend, where Bologna beat 14 other teams in a three-run final.

The next round takes place on Saturday, May 31, in Milan. The club will set up a starting ramp in the city's Piazza Cadorna that will give the cars a boost as they run along the Foro Bonaparte alongside the Sforzesco castle. Nice scenery, but who will see anything but the cars?

What this means to you: Of all tributes to Ferrari's racing pedigree, this just might be the most touchingly sincere. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
