Crowning Touch: Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M Gets iPod Touch

SCARPERIA, Italy — Ferrari's high-performance, open-top 430 Scuderia Spider 16M is the icing on the cake, coming out on the heels of Ferrari's 16th Formula 1 victory in the 2008 Constructor's World Championship.

It gets the same 510-horsepower 4.3-liter V8 as the Scuderia coupe as well as the six-speed F1 paddle shift transmission. Ferrari claims the Scuderia Spider rounded the Fiorano circuit faster than any other open-top road car the company has ever built — including the F50 supercar.

Weighing 176 pounds less (2,954 pounds total dry weight) than the standard F430 Spider, the vehicle travels from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.7 seconds and maxes out at 195.7 mph. New features include a special rear grille plaque commemorating Ferrari's 16th title, a roll bar with a carbon fiber-outer shell and — tempting toy — an exclusive 16GB iPod Touch that docks right in the dashboard.

The limited-edition iPods include content such as photos, videos and Ferrari engine sounds. A Cascade radio is also offered with more features like Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and Ferrari will still throw in the iPod if you decide to choose the more standard stereo.

The car is available in a choice of two new color schemes. The standard version is a black with gray trim, while a tricolor livery is also offered as part of the Carrozzeria Scaglietti personalization program.

Only 499 Scuderia Spiders are being built, and they should go for much more than the close-to-$280,000 base price of the coupe.

Inside Line says: That's 499 limited-edition iPod Touches for sale, although you have to buy the Ferrari if you want to get your hands on one. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
