German Automakers Embrace Home Field Advantage at 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, Says Edmunds.com

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — September 10, 2013 — German luxury brands will command most of the spotlight at this week's 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, reports Edmunds.com, the premier resource for car shopping and automotive information. Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz will all unveil highly-anticipated debuts and concepts at their hometown show, which promises an impressive display of high-end luxury vehicles.

Audi will make its big splash with the debut of the 2015 Audi A8. The vehicle is due in U.S. showrooms next fall, and expected changes include restyled headlights and taillights, and an updated night-vision system.

BMW will continue its string of green-themed unveils with its concept X5 eDrive. While it's unclear when the vehicle will eventually make its way to showrooms, the concept plug-in hybrid SUV is expected to return the U.S. equivalent of 62 mpg and could travel up to 19 miles on electric power alone. In comparison, the conventional 2014 BMW X5 sDrive35i is rated by the EPA at 19 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway.

Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, aims to compete in the luxury compact SUV segment when it unveils its 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA. Little specific information has leaked on the vehicle, but the production GLA bears a strong resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA that debuted earlier this year at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. There's also much anticipation about — and little information for — the debut of M-B's S-Class Coupe concept.

While German automakers might headline the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, other luxury brands will try to make a splash of their own. Some of the non-German vehicle debuts are:

  • Jaguar C-X17 — The C-X17 is Jaguar's long-awaited entry into the crossover SUV market, and will compete directly with the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
  • Infiniti Q30 Concept — This premium compact sedan is designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
  • Lexus LF-NX — This concept compact crossover is Lexus's answer to the Range Rover Evoque and attempt to win over an avant-garde audience.

Edmunds.com's full coverage of the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show will be updated all week long. Edmunds.com editors will also break down their favorite highlights from the show in a special episode of "Edmunds Live" in Frankfurt, which can be found this Friday on Edmunds.com's YouTube page.
