2006 Dodge Viper SRT10
What's Special About It?
Just as Dodge did with the first-generation Viper GTS, the company is answering the call for a coupe version of its muscle-bound roadster. Catering to those who prefer the comfort and increased stiffness afforded by the closed body style, the Viper coupe also offers more exclusivity, which counts for a lot in this segment.
Starting with the already impressively rigid roadster, the engineers further beefed up the structure, knowing that some owners will want to use their Viper coupe for racing. Other features that serve the racing crowd include the double bubble-style roof which allows space for helmeted heads as well as a cockpit roomy enough to accommodate a safety cage. Suede seat inserts do their part to hold pilot and co-pilot in place as they attack the corners.
The running gear is unchanged, and we don't think anyone's going to complain about a 500-horsepower V10 that, according to Dodge, allows a sub-4-second blast to 60. We'd expect the quarter-mile run to also be a brief affair, if our 12-second experience with the roadster is any indicator. Massive Brembo brakes are claimed to need less than 100 feet to haul this Viper down from 60 mph.
Paying homage to the original Viper GTS, the new coupe will wear a similar color scheme, meaning blue paint with white racing stripes. A set of unique five-spoke wheels further distinguishes the coupe from its roadster sibling.
What's Edmunds' Take?
We think the coupe looks dynamite, and of course there's no denying the performance and the thrills it promises. Those who participate in club racing may want to consider trading in their old GTS on this bad boy. — John DiPietro
