Dodge Viper GTS/R
What's special about it?
500 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque, for starters. The aluminum V10 engine, along with the spaceframe chassis and six-speed manual transmission, all carryover from the current Viper GTS. Items like a dry oil sump, a bigger NACA intake duct and improved air management contribute to the 50-horsepower advantage this concept car has over the current version. With maximum performance as the company's guiding mantra, Chrysler lowered the GTS/R's overall height by three inches, bumped wheelbase by 3 inches and widened the track by 2 inches, enhancing the car's stability at high speeds. These new dimensions, along with a striking one-piece carbon fiber body, maximize the Viper's already menacing look. Brake cooling openings are prominent in the front fascia and rear fenders, as is the large, roof-mounted rear air diffuser and massive rear hoop spoiler with cockpit-controlled wing angle. While the exterior looks race-ready, the driver-oriented interior has amenities like a high-end stereo, air conditioning, leather seating surfaces and adjustable pedals. Brushed aluminum and clear-coated carbon fiber maintain the GTS/R's performance perspective from behind the wheel.
Why should I care?
Although skeptics have questioned whether Dodge would (or should) continue to produce the Viper versus letting it slip into legendary status (a la Ford Cobra), the GTS/R is proof that Chrysler's future includes the Dodge Viper. The company has had great success with the current GTS-R in FIA GT2 racing and at Le Mans. If this next version comes to pass, complete with its projected 3.8 second zero-to-60 time and 200 mph top speed, you can expect to see it occupying not only your local Dodge dealer's showroom, but the winner's circle as well.
