AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — With sales of all Dodge Rams dropping by 27 percent so far this year, Chrysler has responded with an aggressive price drop on the 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup. The base 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 regular cab 4x2 model with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 starts at $28,165, including a $950 destination charge.
Dodge says the price on the base model is $1,970 lower than the 2009 model it replaces. The Ram Heavy Duty pickups and how they fare in the declining pickup market are critical for Chrysler because they are the only redesigned 2010 models from the Detroit automaker. They are also the first products to be rolled out under the new Dodge Ram brand for trucks and commercial vehicles.
In comparison, the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty Crew Cab with a 6.0-liter V8 starts at $32,340, including a $995 destination charge.
The 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty is available for the first time with a crew-size cab. Crew cab models start at $31,415, including shipping.
The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty models are expected to arrive in dealerships in November.
Inside Line says: We should know in short order if Chrysler's dramatic pricing strategy on the Ram Heavy Duty pickups is working — or whether another price cut is in order. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
