2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab
What's Special About It?
Realizing that more and more people are using pickup trucks as their family vehicles, Dodge expands, literally, on the crew cab idea with the 2006 Ram Mega Cab.
This enormous pickup essentially trades cargo box capacity for increased passenger space. By substituting a 6-foot, 3-inch box for the typical 8-footer, an additional 20 inches are available and are spliced into the cab. This surgery makes this by far the largest cabin ever offered in a pickup truck. To give you an idea of just how big it is, we're talking over a foot longer than that of the Ford F-250 Crew Cab.
All that space allows more comfort for the rear passengers, even providing them with reclining seat backs. Legroom back there is limousinelike at over 44 inches and an available DVD entertainment system adds to the luxury. When it's time to move stuff, the Mega Cab is ready with a 60/40-split rear seat that, when folded down, offers 71 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
The Mega Cab will be available in Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 models, and all will be built on the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty platform. Dodge's two top engines are assigned Mega Cab duty. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is standard on the 1500 and 2500 models while the mighty 5.9-liter High-Output Cummins Turbo Diesel is optional on the 2500 and standard on the 3500 model. Hooked up to a five-speed automatic, the Hemi provides a class-leading 345 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. Rated at an astounding 610 lb-ft of torque and 325 hp, the Cummins is available with a choice of a new six-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission.
With a maximum towing capacity of 15,800 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 2,840 pounds, the Ram Mega Cab is ready to work as a beast of burden when duty calls.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Most pickup truck owners use the cabin a lot more often than they use the bed. By devoting considerably more space to the passenger compartment, the Mega Cab makes better use of its massive footprint than does the equally huge Quad Cab Long Bed. — John DiPietro
