What is it?
Dodge MAXXcab
What's special about it?
This is the first truck designed by Chrysler with full utilization of the company's "cab-forward" philosophy. As such, it offers incredible interior dimensions without sacrificing real-world utility. Designed to be a truck, office-on-wheels and mobile daycare center at the same time, the MAXXcab features numerous creature comforts along with a 52.7-inch bed. Inside, the seats and door panels are covered in leather while brushed aluminum and wood grain accent the dash area. A driver "Infotronic" system, complete with voice recognition, accommodates Internet access, email, traffic updates, cell phone communication and GPS navigation. The rear seats include three built-in child safety seats, with the center seat's position adjustable via power controls mounted on the front doors. This allows the front passengers to bring infants and toddlers closer to them for tending purposes. A DVD player and Internet access, along with individual speakers mounted inside each rear seat's headrest, keeps passengers entertained. The MAXXcab, powered by a 4.7-liter engine, gets to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds and tops out at 115 mph.
Why should I care?
Despite its unique appearance, this Dodge offers plenty of functionality in a relatively small package. While the bed is only 4 and a half feet long, it's also almost 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep, giving it a wider and deeper bed than many of today's full-size trucks. Overall length is slightly less than that of the current Dakota Quad Cab, making it easy to drive and park in city environments. We also feel that integrating the side steps into the lower door sections is quite ingenious. As the truck market continues to splinter into more and more specialized vehicles, the MAXXcab's minivan-truck hybrid design makes perfect sense. Don't be surprised to see this one end up in showrooms.
