2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8
What's Special About It?
Would you believe that the latest member of the 400-plus-horsepower club is a station wagon?! Yep, it's true, courtesy of Dodge's SRT (Street and Racing Technology) folks.
The heart of the beast is a 6.1-liter Hemi. Based on the 5.7 Hemi, the bigger brute uses more displacement, hotter cams, revised heads, more compression (increased to 10.3 to 1 from 9.6 to 1) and freer breathing intake and exhaust systems. The end result is 425 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque, enough to launch this little red wagon to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. The Dodge boys also claim that it will rip down the quarter-mile in less than 14 ticks and takes less than 110 feet to stop from 60 mph. Suspension mods include firmer shocks and springs and beefier anti-sway bars.
Just so the other parents at your kid's recital know you're not driving any old Magnum, the SRT8 features unique front and rear fascias — the former incorporating functional brake cooling ducts and the latter allowing the beefy, 3.5-inch chrome tips of the dual exhaust to poke through. Five-spoke, 20-inch wheels show off the red Brembo four-piston calipers and are fitted with Goodyear F1 performance rubber spec'ing out at 245/45 front and 255/45 rear.
Inside the cabin, heavily bolstered sport seats with red stitching and carbon-fiberlike accents add function and pizzazz, and luxuries such as a six-disc CD changer and power-adjustable pedals.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Of course, you don't need a 425-hp station wagon. Unless, of course, you think like us, meaning you can never have too much performance. Listing for around $40,000, the Magnum SRT8 strikes us as a steal when compared to the much smaller Audi S4 Avant that has "only" 340 hp and costs $10,000 more. — John DiPietro
