    What Is It?

    What's Special About It?
It may look like a station wagon, but Dodge's latest concept is anything but homely. Not only does it sport broad-shouldered styling that makes it look like the kind of grocery-getter that Mad Max's wife would drive, it has the muscle to back up its sinister appearance. A supercharged 430 horsepower Hemi V8 lurks under the hood while a five-speed automatic borrowed from Mercedes-Benz takes care of the shifts. All that power gets channeled to the rear wheels where the massive 20-inch wheels and tires and fully independent suspension distribute it to the ground. The Magnum is built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive Chrysler platform that will form the basis for numerous new Dodge and Chrysler models in the near future.

Billed as a performance touring car, the interior of the Magnum features plenty of functionality like fold-flat seats and a built-in cooler while still maintaining its futuristic appearance. Competition gauges and drilled aluminum pedals similar to those found in the Viper SRT-10 remind the driver that despite its spacious interior the Magnum is still all business on the road.

    Why Should You Care?
Like the Pacifica crossover concept shown last year, the Magnum isn't just an auto show dream car. Chrysler officials announced that the Magnum will in fact enter production early next year with relatively few changes from the concept. The supercharger may not make it to the production line, but some form of Hemi V8 will be optional while a more modest V6 will act as the standard power plant. All-wheel drive will also be an option to give the Magnum stunning all-around performance as well as supreme functionality. We can't wait. — Ed Hellwig
