2009 Dodge Journey Recalled for Problem That Could Cause Engine Compartment Fire

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chrysler is recalling 6,692 2009 Dodge Journey vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter engine to fix a problem with the engine wiring harness that could result in an engine compartment fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In its recalls summary of the problem, the NHTSA says the engine wiring harness on the affected Dodge Journey models may contact the left transaxle mount. "Damage to the wiring harness could result in an engine compartment fire," said the government watchdog.

Dealers will check the engine wiring harness for damage. If the harness is damaged, the wiring will be fixed and a tire wrap installed to secure the harness away from the left transaxle mount, says the NHTSA. If no damage is found, a tie wrap will be installed to secure the harness away from the left transaxle mount.

Chrysler has not yet set up an owner notification schedule of this recall, according to documents filed in early June with the U.S. government. Chrysler first became aware of the problem in mid-March when a Dodge Journey with a 3.5-liter engine at the company's Toluca Assembly Plant experienced a malfunction indicator light illumination during a vehicle audit, says the NHTSA's chronology of the problem.

Dodge Journey owners can contact Chrysler at (800) 853-1403 for further information.
