2006 Dodge Charger
What's Special About It?
The Charger represents the latest step in Chrysler's current turnaround efforts. We like the subtle retro-styling cues and fully functional rear seat, but purists will bemoan the rear doors. With the same underpinnings as the recently introduced Magnum and Chrysler 300 models, along with 50/50 front-to-rear weight balance, we're confident this Charger won't handle like the "classic" versions — a good thing indeed.
The standard engine is a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6, but "R/T" models come with the 340-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V8. They also offer stiffer suspension settings and a leather interior. Those wanting even tighter handling can order the creatively named "Performance Handling Group." All models feature a five-speed automatic with manual-shift mode, but no true manual transmission is offered. Pricing will be similar to the Magnum and Chrysler 300, meaning between $24,000 and $35,000, depending on trim level and options — among which are a rear entertainment system and DVD navigation.
Racing fans should be particularly happy to learn that Chargers will again represent Dodge on the NASCAR ovals starting in February.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Like many enthusiasts, we question the use of a "Charger" badge on a four-door sedan, but between its aggressive styling, capable performance and four-door utility we predict high sales — exactly what Chrysler needs right now. Besides, the names "500" and "Daytona" are still out there, just waiting to be used on a two-door coupe version sporting an SRT8 engine. — Karl Brauer
