CHICAGO — In what is sure to be a polarizing color choice, Dodge on Monday unveiled the 2010 Dodge Challenger Furious Fuchsia editions that seem drawn from the lipstick color palette of Estée Lauder and Lancôme. The special-edition Challengers were revealed ahead of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, which kicks off this week.

Dodge explained that the 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic and Challenger SRT8 Furious Fuchsia models answer "customers' desire for the return of more Dodge brand high-impact heritage paint hues." However, it is tempting to liken them to the long string of pink-hued vehicles that run the gamut from the 1955 Dodge La Femme to the pink Fiat 500 that was unveiled earlier this year by the Italian automaker. The dictionary defines fuchsia as a "bright, purplish-red color," but the images seem to suggest that the Challenger's fuchsia shade veers more toward the pink end of the spectrum.

Dodge said the 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic in Furious Fuchsia starts at $35,140, including a $725 destination charge. The companion 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 in Furious Fuchsia starts at $45,150, including shipping. Both can be ordered in March, with production slated for May. Dodge says just 400 units of the Challenger SRT8 in Furious Fuchsia will be built.

The Challenger R/T Classic Furious Fuchsia gets 20-inch polished-aluminum heritage wheels with all-season performance tires, egg-crate grille with R/T badging, body-color rear spoiler, functional hood scoop and a bright racing-style fuel filler door. The cabin gets Pearl White performance seats with optional Furious Fuchsia French-seamed stitching. It is equipped with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 linked to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission.

The Challenger SRT8 Furious Fuchsia has Pearl White leather SRT performance seats, 20-inch SRT forged-aluminum wheels with Satin Black accents, serialized dash plaque indicating the limited production series of 400 and retro-inspired chromed quad exhaust tips. It is equipped with a 6.1-liter Hemi V8.

Inside Line says: Consumers will vote with their pocketbooks on whether a pink Challenger is a good idea. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
