What is it?
2001 Daewoo Korando
What's special about it?
After a rocky first year, Daewoo brings forth its first entry into the ever-growing American sport-utility market. The two-door SUV features a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine, producing 225 horsepower, that's mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Full-time, four-wheel drive is standard, with a low-range transfer case for serious off-road use. Available in either hard or soft top variants, the Korando is very Jeep Wrangler-like in appearance, but unlike its counterpart, comes fully loaded with ABS, power windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD stereo as standard equipment.
Why should you care?
Daewoo enters the SUV segment while treading in rough waters. With the company falling under hard financial times and facing potential auction in the near future, the Korando could be a boom for the fledgling automaker. Priced at $20,000, the Korando may have more than college students waiting to drive this new SUV. Expect to see the Korando in showrooms in June of this year.
