BARCELONA, Spain — Renault affiliate Dacia has unveiled a companion to its Sandero hatchback, a five-passenger people mover called the Dacia Sandero Stepway, at the 2009 Barcelona Auto Show.

The Stepway is assembled by Dacia in Romania. It goes on sale across Europe in September.

The tall crossover has more ground clearance than the standard Sandero, plus skid plates and a roof rack. It also features black headlamp masks, satin-finish trim and 16-inch alloy wheels.

    The Stepway offers a choice of a 90-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine or a 70-hp 1.6 turbodiesel.

Inside Line says: If the name sounds vaguely familiar, French parent Renault builds its own variant in Brazil for the Latin American market. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
