GUANGZHOU, China — Dongfeng-Peugeot-Citroën Automobile has introduced the new Dongfeng-Citroën C5 sedan at the 2009 Guangzhou Auto Show. It's the most expensive Citroën model yet to be built by the Chinese joint-venture partners.

The C5 is going into production at the joint venture's recently opened second plant in Wuhan and will go on sale in January, priced from $29,000-$44,000. It will be joined next year by a locally built version of the Peugeot 408, which shares its midsize platform.

The China-built C5 will be offered with a choice of 1.8- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines and a 3.0-liter V6. It will compete head to head with the locally built Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Magotan.

The partners also are considering local production next year of hybrid versions of the C-Elysée and C-Quatre and the Peugeot 307.

Inside Line says: Plain and simple, with familiar Citroën styling cues. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
