WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 299,718 2008 minivans, including the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, because of an airbag problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"These vehicles may experience a heating and air-conditioner (HVAC) condensate leak from the HVAC drain grommet onto the occupant restraint control module, which can lead to the illumination of the airbag warning light and a potential inadvertent airbag deployment without warning," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "An inadvertent airbag deployment could result in injury to the seat occupant in front of the deploying airbag and/or a vehicle crash."
This is an extension of a November 2010 recall on 367,350 Chrysler minivans.
There have been no confirmed reports of an inadvertent airbag deployment on a vehicle that had the prior recall completed, according to other documentation filed by Chrysler with the federal government.
Chrysler and Dodge dealers will replace the affected airbag module. The recall is expected to begin sometime this month. Owners can contact Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.
Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned Chrysler or Dodge minivans, be aware that a recall is in the works.

I've had the displeasure of being a passenger in a Caravan a few years ago. By far the worst car I've ever ridden in. Rear brakes didn't always operate properly and you could smell the brake compound burning from inside the vehicle. The most ridiculous road and wind noise at cruising speed of any production car I've experienced. The shimmy, control and ride was horrible and everything seemed held together by Elmer's glue. In other words, no surprise here.
The new SRT Cherokee is intriguing but no off-roading makes it a no go for me. That's assuming it won't actually fall apart like everything before it.

As someone who has gone through four various Daimler minivans since 1990 , I can say all of them are of generally poor quality. The benefit is, they're also dirt cheap and have no resale value.
The worst was the 2000 Voyager. Brakes literally died on the freeway, it was magic how I was able to come off of the freeway and luckily the Chrysler dealership was there and I stopped perfectly when in Neutral thanks to the little incline of the entrance of the place. I really don't know how everything was perfect with green lights and all. After that I said I'm never going to buy a Dodge anything for a while because cheapness is no substitute for failed brakes.
