2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible
What's special about it?
After debuting the PT Cruiser Convertible Styling Study at the 2001 New York Auto Show, DaimlerChrysler performed an Internet poll to gauge reaction to the concept of a drop-top Cruiser. Ninety percent of respondents loved it and wanted the car built.
The company will fulfill that desire in the first quarter of 2004, when the PT Cruiser Convertible goes into production at the car's Toluca, Mexico, assembly facility. It joins a growing list of special-edition Cruisers, starting with the 2002 flame cars, Woodies and Dream Cruiser, and continuing with the upcoming 2003 turbocharged GT Cruiser.
Notably, the PT Cruiser Convertible's rear seats can be folded down to create a two-seater with tremendous cargo capacity. DaimlerChrysler didn't provide specifications, but we're assuming the Convertible will be powered by the standard 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine currently offered in the regular PT.
Why should you care?
Volkswagen is expected to formally announce one of the worst kept secrets in the auto industry later this year; namely, that they plan to build a New Beetle Convertible for public consumption. By announcing the PT Cruiser Convertible in Geneva, DaimlerChrysler trumps VW and has stolen some of the specialty car limelight. The question is: Which one can you buy first? Christian J. Wardlaw
