    Chrysler Strikes Again

March, 1998 -- Ford and General Motors had better watch out, Chrysler Corporation is poised to snap up the Coolest Manufacturer in the United States award. To lock in their position for this competition, which exists only in this writer's mind, Chrysler introduced yet another awesome concept car at the Geneva International Auto Show this week.

Dubbed the Pronto Cruiser, Chrysler has thrown yet another variation of their versatile small car concept at us. Like the Pronto Spyder that was shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, the Pronto Cruiser is a definite lifestyle car, evoking memories of modified forties coupes in much the same way as the Plymouth Prowler reminds us of forties hotrod roadsters. Any similarities between the two are purely intentional. The Pronto Cruiser is designed to turn heads just like the Prowler.

Powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, the Pronto Cruiser is not going to go screaming down the road. If that were the intention they would have shoehorned in the Chrysler 300M's 3.5-liter 250-horsepower engine and called this thing the Pronto Screamer. Nope, cruising is what this car is all about, and its thrifty engine, outlandish looks, and potential for cheapness (It's built on the composite material Pronto-platform, remember?) means that if put into production it could revolutionize the look of Friday night on your town's main drag. The kids are gonna love it, the one inside me sure does.
