WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 4,336 of its 2009 Jeep Commander, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler four-door 4x4s because the driver's airbag may not deploy, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The federal watchdog said, in its recall summary of the problem, that wiring may be reversed on the steering column control module driver airbag squib connector.
"The driver's airbag may not deploy as intended," said NHTSA. "In the event of a crash, the driver's airbag will not deploy and will not be able to properly protect an occupant, increasing the risk of injuries."
In separate documentation filed with the federal government, Chrysler said it is not aware of any injuries or fatalities related to the defect.
Chrysler dealers will inspect the wires and replace the steering column control module for free. The recall is expected to begin in May. Owners can contact Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.
