Chrysler Recalls 2007-'08 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty

WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 3,663 2007-'08 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty vehicles equipped with manual transmissions to replace the parking brake lever assembly. The Detroit automaker said it is aware of 24 reports alleging "various degrees of reduced effectiveness of the park brake system, including one report alleging a vehicle crash."

In its recall summary of the problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the park brake lever clutch drum may "distort and reduce the effectiveness of the park brake system.... This could allow the vehicle to move inadvertently and cause a crash without warning," NHTSA said.

The recall involves Nitro and Liberty vehicles equipped with manual transmissions and built before February 2008.

Chrysler dealers will replace the lever assembly for free. The recall is expected to begin later this month. Owners can contact Chrysler at (800) 853-1403 for more information.
