Japan Quake Aftermath May Disrupt Supply of Chevy Volt Transmission

    • The ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan, triggered by last week's earthquake and tsunami, could disrupt the supply of Japanese-built transmissions for the Chevrolet Volt.
    • GM on Thursday said Volt production in the U.S. "is currently not impacted by the crisis in Japan."
    • GM President Mark Reuss told reporters in Detroit on Wednesday that the automaker might not be able to count on an uninterrupted supply of Volt transmissions from Japan.

    DETROIT — The ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan, triggered by last week's earthquake and tsunami, could disrupt the supply of Japanese-built transmissions for the Chevrolet Volt.

    The official window sticker, or Monroney label, on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt indicates that the car's transmission (described in parentheses as the "electric drive unit") is sourced from Japan.

    Unconfirmed reports from that country suggested the Japanese transmission plant that supplies the Volt had been shut down as a result of the quake and ensuing nuclear crisis.

    In an e-mail response to a telephone query Thursday from Inside Line, General Motors spokesman Rob Peterson said, "Volt production is currently not impacted by the crisis in Japan. We continue to monitor the situation closely as we do for all GM products."

    But GM President Mark Reuss, following a speech Wednesday in Detroit, told reporters that GM might not be able to count on an uninterrupted supply of Volt transmissions from Japan, saying, "We just don't know from a supply standpoint," according to The New York Times.

    As for the Volt's chief competitor, the Toyota Prius, the Japanese automaker on Thursday told Inside Line: "Prius vehicles are built in Japan, and thus impacted more by the production halt there. But for now inventory levels of the Prius at U.S. dealerships are generally still adequate."

    And I am talking about the fact that the way the article is written it's difficult to determine if the spokesman made the statement or if IL is interpreting those words:

    Once again, a conclusion is reached and then all new information is filtered in justification of that conclusion. Fanboy/hater syndrome to the max.

    Sounds like the typical fanboy/hater who reaches a conclusion then uses every piece of tortured logic they can scrap together to justify their ignorance. Some people look for information to advance their knowledge, others merely search the cosmos seeking a justification for their biases. An insult from the likes of someone like that is actually the highest praise.

    Sounds just like a typical denier who trys to find any excuse to say " I can't tell..."  I am talking about GM's claim of "No Direct Mechanical Linkage From the Engine". Anyone in auto industry or mechanical engineering knows the meaning of transmission which is way beyond what you can apprehand.

    I'm glad you could decipher this somehow. I can't tell if GM is calling it a transmission or if IL is. However, while GM said the Volt was revolutionary, they never described it as a pure EV. The "debates" were largely diatribes of haters and fanboys.

    OMG!  Thank you GM, you finaly admited that there is a Transmission in Volt.  Before GM claimed that volt is a revolutionary electrical car without "direct mechanical linkage from engine" , which caused alot of debates on whether GM lies or not.

    "Unlike a conventional powertrain, there are no step gears within the unit, and No Direct Mechanical Linkage from the engine, through the drive unit to the wheels."

    OMG!  Thank you GM, you finaly admited that there is a Transmission in Volt.  Before GM claimed that volt is a revolutionary electrical car without "direct mechanical linkage from engine" , which caused alot of debates on whether GM lies or not.
