DETROIT — The Chevrolet Volt is being prepped for an appearance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, General Motors confirmed on Tuesday.
"You'll see it in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics," said Britta Gross, GM director of Global Energy Systems, Infrastructure and Commercialization in a Web chat on the corporate GM FastLane blog.
When asked if athletes or spectators will be able to test-drive the Volt at the Olympics, Gross said she wasn't sure. "Plans are not finalized yet, but the Volt will be at the games," she said.
The 2010 Winter Olympics will kick off on February 12 when the Olympic flame arrives in Vancouver.
The wide-ranging Web chat revealed a few more key details about the electric Chevrolet Volt.
Gross confirmed that the Volt can be driven "all-electric, all the time."
"You can drive this vehicle all electric all the time and we have anticipated the case where a consumer doesn't use any gas, yet we don't want engine problems so we've designed the engine to start periodically (and unnoticeably) to stir the tank to prevent any mechanical or stagnant fuel issues," she wrote.
She also said that there will be a system that links the Volt to GM's OnStar system to collect battery information.
"The Volt OnStar gives us the ability to not only collect data (with consumer consent) but also communicate this information back to the consumer," Gross noted.
Inside Line says: The luge won't be the only thing to get your heart pumping at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Look for the Volt to be a key part of the mix. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
