BEIJING — Marrying the Chevrolet Volt to the Chevrolet Orlando, General Motors has created a compact people mover with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It's called the Chevrolet Volt MPV5.
The five-passenger crossover concept, which debuted at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, borrows not only the propulsion system, but also styling cues from the Volt sedan, which is slated to go into production late this year in the U.S. and will go on sale in China in 2011.
The Volt MPV5 is 7 inches longer and 7 inches taller than the Volt sedan. It features a Sonic Blue Metallic paint scheme, with 19-inch wheels and dual skylight panels in the roof.
The crossover also borrows the Volt's gauge cluster and center stack as well as its two-tone leather seats. The Volt MPV5 also sports flip-and-fold second-row seating.
The Volt MPV5 uses the sedan's 16-kW lithium-ion battery pack as well as its electric motor and 1.4-liter "range extender" gasoline engine. The concept's range on pure battery power is 32 miles; with the gas engine as a generator, range is extended to 300 miles.
