DETROIT — The base 2009 Chevrolet Traverse starts at $28,990, including a $735 destination charge, according to General Motors. It is priced at $5 less than its sibling, the 2008 Saturn Outlook XE, which starts at $28,995, including shipping. The Traverse hits showrooms in the fall.

The Traverse is the fourth of GM's Lambda-based crossover lineup, which includes the Outlook, the Buick Enclave and the GMC Acadia. The Enclave is the most expensive of the bunch, starting at $33,525 for a base 2008 Enclave CX. The base 2008 GMC Acadia SLE starts at $30,490, including shipping.

The Traverse will be offered in three trim levels and in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.

It is powered by a 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that delivers 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. It returns 17 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway.

What this means to you: If you're pinching pennies and you want a GM crossover, the Traverse may fit the bill nicely. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
