- General Motors is investing $331 million to produce the next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade in Texas.
- The investment is part of GM's ongoing $2-billion renovation and expansion of its North American manufacturing facilities.
- The redesigned Tahoe and Suburban and their sister models at GMC and Cadillac are expected to be considerably lighter, with smaller, more efficient engines.
ARLINGTON, Texas — General Motors said Thursday that it will invest $331 million to produce the next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade at its Arlington plant.
The new full-size SUVs are expected to go into production in calendar year 2013 as 2014 models. The redesigned Tahoe and Suburban and their sister models at GMC and Cadillac are expected to be considerably lighter, with smaller, more efficient engines.
In a statement, GM said the future SUVs would "offer better fuel efficiency than ever before without sacrificing the features and functionality (buyers have) come to expect."
GM in recent weeks has announced similar investments at plants in Detroit, Flint, Toledo and Bowling Green.
Inside Line says: Good news for American workers — and consumers, too — as GM continues to re-invest in and upgrade its aging assembly and parts plants.

Please keep it a column shift, absolutely Not a waste of space console shifter. Better yet make an IMPROVED dash mounted dial/button shift like the 2013 dodge ram.
A small turbo diesel engine will provide plenty of power/torque with greatly improved mpg's. Offer 3:73 and 4:10 rear axles. Not everybody needs to tow but would like to know it's there if needed.
Please incorporate FLAT FOLDING Rear Seats! This alone will create more buyers. Increase the passenger legroom spacing by at least 3 inches, ie. wider "B" pillar. Still allow 2nd row seats to recline a bit.
Majority of the Tahoe's are street driven, occasional gravel/dirt plowed roads. Great family hauler whom like it quiet and smoothing on bumps, potholes. Create a suspension that is Very smooth and absorbing yet stiffens as necessary. Heavy hauling/towing suspension could/must be offered as an 'affordable' OEM installed option.
All Wheel Drive would be preferred for most users. Go one step further with AWD by incorporating a low range gear. ie. an 8 speed transmission capable of an extra gear BEFORE 1st gear which can only be engaged electronically while in Park/full stop.

Please don't take the S out of the SUV like GM did with the 'crossovers'.
Great looking cars, lots of options, but they are CARS not SUV's. I NEED 4 Wheel Drive, not All-Wheel drive. I also need to load the back of the vehicle enclosed out of the weather and tow when necessary. I actually drive Off Road, my current 01 Tahoe has been in the Atlantic Ocean and pulled other All-Wheel cars out when they got stuck. Fuel economy is a concern, and was maybe looking to downsize, but the midsize crossovers aren't offered with a true 4-wheel option anymore, not even as an option, come on! I realize soccer moms don't need it, but some of us do.

MK40, I would like to see a diesel in a tahoe. To all that is saying "who feel very inadequate!". I do agree with you. In my line of work, I do need a 4x4 working in the winter. Plus I do tow. I would not get one if I did not need it.

GM just doesn't get it. These overweight gas gusleling dinosaurs are over priced and under sold today, so let's try again? The entire "new" management team needs to be shown the exit.
The stock continues to tank below the IPO price. The government has invested $14 in GM and Chysler we will never get back, and gave GM a free ride on $45Billion in tax writeoffs no other company coming out of bankrupcy has ever been able to keep. It was simply a bad decision designed to buy votes, and we the taxpayers lost.

Perhaps it's seeing someone else with a big vehicle that makes you feel inadequate? Different people have different needs and wants. It's unfortunate that others having choice makes you unhappy, but oh well.

@ambee514; Driving a big heavy gas guzzling SUV is so important to the guys out there, who feel very inadequate!

I'd like to see a diesel engine like the new Cummins 2.8L 380lb-ft being developed as an option in full-size SUVs. I think that would be a very efficient option. Seems like a smaller diesel is ideally suited for heavy vehicles like this on local road.
