LOS ANGELES — General Motors took the wraps off two of its flagship SUVs on Thursday, revealing a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban and 2007 GMC Yukon XL that are leaner-looking, as well as better-handling, quieter, and safer.

The 2007 Suburban will be available in the second quarter of 2006.

At the start of production, Suburban 1500 models will come with a 5.-3-liter V8. Later, a new 350-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8 will be available. The Suburban's new look includes a fast-rake windshield, a bulging power dome hood, and a new fender design. An available Z71 Off-Road package, available in the fourth quarter of 2006, features larger tow hook openings, larger foglamps, platinum chrome grille trim, and 18-inch wheels and tires.

The GMC Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali become available in the second quarter of 2006. The XL models offer new power fold-and-tumble second-row seats. The Denali flagship model has a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 380 hp. It is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission.

What this means to you: GM spiffs up its big SUVs in nearly every way, from powertrain to seat treatments.
