TASHKENT, Uzbekistan — General Motors has begun assembling the Chevrolet Spark in Uzbekistan, the former Soviet republic where GM still controls 95 percent of the passenger-car market.
GM Daewoo, the U.S. automaker's Korean subsidiary, is providing complete knock-down (CKD) kits of the Spark to GM Uzbekistan for local assembly. The car, which is marketed in Korea as the Matiz Creative, will be sold in Uzbekistan with a choice of 1.0- or 1.2-liter engines.
GM Uzbekistan has an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles and assembles versions of several GM Daewoo models, including the Lacetti Premiere and Tosca sedans and the Winstorm utility vehicle.
Inside Line says: The Spark is being rolled out across global markets, including India and Eastern Europe. U.S. sales are slated to begin in early 2012. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
